The other day during a Football Faith breakfast, a question was brought up that stuck with me for quite some time:

How can I prove that God exists if I can’t see Him?

This is a question that I believe everyone faces in one form or another. Maybe you asked that question yourself or perhaps someone asked you. Did the question scare you? From my personal experience, it seems to scare a lot of people! As if not knowing how to answer somehow makes them a bad Christian. Well, rest easy my fellow brothers and sisters. Not knowing the answer to the tough questions doesn’t make you bad. However, it should be a wake-up call to you. If someone asked you about who your significant other is, what their likes, dislikes, and habits were like you would answer. God is our greatest love and wants an intimate relationship with us. He knows everything about us (Psalm 139:1-6), so we should learn as much as we can about Him!

First, we have to understand that those who genuinely seek God will find evidence of Him. Convincing a hardened skeptic is difficult. Don’t be discouraged or swayed by someone who refuses to listen. Stand firm on what you know!

Three Ways We Can Know God Exists

  1. The world around us- It doesn’t make sense that the universe just began from nothing. Something, or rather someone, had to form it. We as believers know that “In the beginning, God created…” (Genesis 1:1), so for us the “who” is simple. When we look at Romans 1:19-20 we see,For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[a] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

God does not hide Himself, He wants you to know He exists.

  2. We know He exists by our conscience- Have you ever done something wrong and felt guilty? I know I certainly have! While some may believe that morality is subjective and based on our life experiences or cultures, right is right, and wrong is wrong. The fact that you felt bad without someone having to tell you is evidence that God has made you in His image. A basic understanding of morality is hardwired into you. Consider Romans 2:14-15:

“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness…”

God does not want you to do bad things. That guilt is evidence of God’s law written on your heart, reminding you of his standards.

  3. We know He exists thanks to Jesus– Jesus didn’t just claim to be the Son of God- He proved it through His life, death, and resurrection. Our belief in Him as Lord and Savior is the cornerstone of our Faith. He wasn’t just a good teacher or a good person, but God. In John 14:9, Jesus says that to see Him was to see God, and in Colossians 1:15-17

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation…”

Now, bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list of evidence. This just scratches the surface of a much deeper conversation. But that conversation is not with me or with anyone else to have with you. That conversation is with the one who knows you better than you know yourself.

Today, for your “Five-Second Challenge“, pray for the Lord to reveal Himself to you. Perhaps, in your wilderness season, it’s a bit difficult to see Him and you’re questioning if He’s there or even listening. I can promise you He is, but I can’t give you my faith. You must seek him out and see for yourself. Get to know Him in His Scriptures first so that you know Him and not what others say about Him. God is not hiding from you- He wants to be known. If you seek Him sincerely, He will reveal Himself in ways you never expected.
